Assessment and Reporting

Assessment and Reporting 2025-26

At The Cowplain School we have regular, rigorous assessments for all year groups twice a year; all assessment results are published in students' reports and can be found on Insight. Examples of reports are given on links below. The reports will also contain information on attendance which is not given in every report example.

Every report for every student in every year group contains the following:

1) The assessment results in the form of a percentage and the average assessment result of all the students who have completed the assessment.

2) The students’ pathway, which gives students a target grade range to not limit students to one specific target grade.

In the guided pathway students are aiming for a grade 5. The scaffolded students are aiming for a 5 to 7 grade range and the independent students are aiming for a 7 to 9 grade range. The terms guided, scaffolded and independent describe the type of learning we would expect the student to do, e.g. scaffolded students receive more support by the teacher scaffolding the learning for them, while independent students are expected to work more independently.

3) An attitude to learning and an attitude to home learning grade (ATL and ATH grade criteria can be found in Resources).

4) An indication whether the student is currently exceeding (E), meeting (M) or a concern (C) in relation to their target pathway.

5) A rank order position for each subject and the average KS2 rank order (based on English and Maths) on entry for comparison. This rank order information will be used to change class sets after the reporting.

All assessments for all year groups, except for practical assessments, take place in classroom or the hall. Students have an assessment Assembly or assessment Reflection Time two weeks before the assessments start, followed by two weeks of revision in class.  Home learning is based around revision too.

Students from Year 7 to Y10 are issued with a Knowledge Organiser, a booklet which summarises all the knowledge to learn to be prepared for the assessment. In Year 11 we expect students to purchase revision guides, which can be obtained via this link

Year 11:

The 1st Assessment Cycle is based on students having regular extended learning checks to facilitate frequent exam practice followed by detailed feedback on how to improve. These extended learning check points take place regularly in all subjects (except for Art and Photography). This extended assessment period is used to in inform the first set of students’ reports. The students’ reports will be published in the week of 17th November, followed by an online Year 11 parents evening on Thursday 20th November.

The 2nd Assessment Cycle takes place over a period of three weeks, starting from the 7th January to 23rd January. This assessment period is designed to mimic the real GCSE assessment period as much as possible. These reports are published in the week of the 23rd February and are followed by an in-person parents evening (on Thursday 26th February). There will also be an opportunity to collect the results early on Thursday 12th February as part of a Mock Exam Result day, which will take place in the afternoon. Students will be invited to collect results in-person and parents will be welcome too.
